Perahera Elephant

Elephants are mighty and graceful creatures, and in many cultures, symbolize abundance and fertility. They are an integral part of a Sri Lankan religious festival, celebrated since 300 AD., The Festival of Perahera, common to Hindus and Buddhists, and connected to the process of invoking Gods to bless farmers with rain and cultivate their crops with health and fertility. Hundreds of jeweled and decorated elephants, in bright costume and lights, parade in the festival along with thousands of spiritual pilgrims. The largest elephant carries a golden casket said to hold a tooth relic of the Buddha.

These miniature Perahera elephants are sewn in brightly colored hand dyed and hand woven mercerised cotton, which shines like silk, emulating the lustrous elephant costumes worn during the festival. Ideal petite gift for any elephant lover.

100% hand woven cotton, hand dyed with eco-friendly child safe Swiss dyes and stuffed with a natural plant fiber. Learn more about these handcrafted toys and their makers at Eco & Ethical and Barefoot Toys.
